Here in Melbourne, AUSTRALIA, members of the local anarchist black cross ( abcmelb@yahoo.com.au ) met at 11.30am Saturday June 12th, in the busy City Bourke Street mall on the corner of Swanston Street.

A Banner was displayed calling FREE FREE !
Leaflets were distroed out to passers by and some stopped and spoke asking who Free is and what we were on about.
A few of the “usual suspects” hung about and joined in with the event.
A letter was signed to be sent to Jeff in Jail via his supporters.
Another local group of anarks has proposed to hold a benefit event, sooner than later.
It felt good to know that other folks were also in the streets around the planet that day keeping up the good fight.

International Day Of Action
June 12: Solidarity Day For Jeffrey Luers

Luers back in 1998 tree-sitting In June 2001, 23-year-old environmental activist Jeffrey Luers was sentenced to 22 years and 8 months in prison for the burning of three Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) in Eugene, Oregon, USA. To make a statement about global warming, Luers with the assistance of another individual, set fire to three SUVs at a car dealership. Their stated purpose was to raise awareness about global warming and the role that SUVs play in that process.

They took measures to make sure that no one would be injured as a result of their action and scouted the location for months beforehand. An arson specialist later confirmed that the action did not pose any threat to people based on its size and distance from any fuel source. Despite no physical harm being caused, and a small $40,000 in damages for cars that were later resold, Luers was sent to prison for a sentence considerably longer than those convicted of murder, kidnapping and rape in Oregon.

June 12 is an International Day of Action for Jeffrey Luers. Solidarity events will be held all over the world, including in Melbourne. You can show solidarity with Jeffrey Luers by attending a picket organised by the Anarchist Black Cross (Melbourne) outside the Nike building at 11:30PM on Saturday. Luers is currently having a difficult time dealing with prison life.
